The catalyst proved to be the epic debates with the so-called Little Giant, Stephen Douglas. The two friends had debated each other many times before, and Douglas had always won, so he must have felt he had little to fear by agreeing to debate Lincoln in towns all across Illinois. But the Lincoln he now faced had been reborn in the ashes of defeat. By the time the debates ended, Lincoln had become a household name across the country. Then the dominoes began to fall, one after another, as the countdown to Fort Sumter began.

I could look over there any Sunday morning and see where Lincoln and his bride had lived. It was easy to imagine him there, for a lady had told me a pretty story of Lincoln at the Globe. She had boarded there one winter when Lincoln was away at Congress, and she remembered his coming back at the close of the session and his progress through the tavern dining room, stopping to shake every outstretched hand. In those days the tavern rooms were heated by stoves, and the Congressman had not been above carrying up armfuls of wood for many of the ladies.

And bursting into tears, turned and went into his own office. Elizabeth Keckley, Mrs. Lincoln’s seamstress, would never forget the sight of Lincoln coming into that room: I never saw a man so bowed down with grief. He came to the bed, lifted the cover from the face of his child, gazed at it long and earnestly, murmuring, “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth. God has called him home. I know that he is much better off in heaven, but then we loved him so. ” Great sobs choked his utterance.
