Yet evidence presented in contemporary newspapers suggests that port records severely understate the actual number of slaves who arrived in North Carolina via sea routes. For instance, according to a 1764 issue of the North Carolina Magazine 179 slaves entered Port Beaufort alone during the year beginning 1 October 1763 and ending 1 October 1764. Compared with this, a liberal reading of the port records has a total of 110 slaves entering all North Carolina's ports of entry during this period. Data are lacking to calculate the relative significance of each port of entry, but it is unlikely that Port Beaufort's share of the total exceeded, or even equaled, one-third.

At the other end of the scale, Lower Cape Fear blacks comprised a lofty 62 percent of the population in both years. In the Upper Cape Fear, despite a 125 percent increase in absolute numbers, the black proportion of the total population declined slightly from 32 to 29 percent. The number of slaves, however, rose both absolutely and proportionately in all other regions of the colony: from one-eighth of the Central Inner Plain-Piedmont's population in 1755 to nearly one-fifth by 1767 and from about one-quarter of the Albemarle, Neuse-Pamlico, and Northern Inner Plain-Piedmont regions in 1755 to nearly 30 percent in each region in 1767.
