Gen. Isaac Rodman’s division deployed one-half mile farther south to watch the road leading from Rohersville. Georgians from Brig. Gen. 4 After examining the terrain on September 15, McClellan decided his best opportunity was to swing around from the north and attack Lee’s left flank. As anyone who is familiar with this series will attest, the purpose of these atlas books is to offer a broad and full understanding of the complete campaign, rather than a micro-history of a particular event or day. To my knowledge, no single source until now has pulled together the myriad of movements and events of this mammoth campaign and offered it in a cartographic form side-by-side with reasonably detailed text complete with endnotes. Like the books that have come before, The Maps of Antietam dissects the actions within each sector of a battlefield for a deeper and hopefully more meaningful understanding and reading experience.

Lee ordered Rodes to halt both brigades for an hour of rest before continuing on to Sharpsburg, where they were to push some Yankee cavalry out of the town. Another orderly arrived with a change in orders: only a portion of Rodes’ command was to advance, so the brigadier selected the 5th and 6th Alabama. Yet another orderly drew in his mount, this one from Maj. Gen. James Longstreet, with orders that Rodes continue marching to Sharpsburg with his entire force. When no enemy cavalry was found in Sharpsburg, Rodes ordered his own men to occupy the high ground southwest of town while Colquitt’s infantry made their way to Boteler’s Ford (presumably to guard the important crossing).
